This one is by far the most severe of the “Twilight” duplicates. And when that collection contains “The Host” and “I Am Number Four,” that is saying something.
Lily Collins’ Clary is just a common teenager gal residing in the cheap film edition of NY city. She is beginning to have thoughts, and discovers herself illustrating glyphs that curiously look like the one-time Turned Sis logo. After she and pal Simon (Robert Sheehan, doing his best Jay Baruchel imitation) discover goth children with English accessories pursuing them, they get into the globe of Shadowhunters.
Changes out Clary is not a simple “Mundane” (think “Muggles,” but more boring). Her mom (Lena Headey, who usually spends most of the film basically asleep) is aspect of a community of devil competitors sworn to secure various “mortal instruments” from the grip of baddies. But now that she’s been mom-napped, it’s up to Clary, Simon and a very brown, very brooding guy known as Jace (Jamie Campbell Bower) to fight some badly delivered CGI animals.
Despite an increase of returning tale, the film is merely an reason to hop from one spookily clothed set to another.
Alas, the titular City of Bone is more of a underground room. Other than a gag about a storage cache of weaponry below every cathedral ceremony, there is hardly a second of levity or creativity. (Watch The Mortal Instruments City of Bones Online) For a film that is wall-to-wall dream, you have seen all of this before, in much better films.
Fun come by the third act, but they are of the so-bad-it’s-good type. Supposedly revelatory collections like “You are a Morgenstern!” do not quite have the designed effect, especially for moviegoers old enough to keep in mind TV’s “Rhoda.” When the older statesman aspect is performed by Jared Harris, one has to wonder how many English level stars pleasantly said, “No, thank you.”
However, writer Cassandra Clare’s guide sequence is incredibly well-liked, with four sequels and three prequels to “Bones” already released, and more on the way.
